Struggenze (2013)
Per quartetto d’archi
A composition for two violins, viola and cello, in which four voices overlap, help and support one another, ultimately coming together at the expressive punctum represented by the Crucifixion of Our Lord. The approach to Alessandro Stradella’s harmony takes place precisely through the dramaturgy of the four voices, whose function is to guide our listening towards the appearance of the vision of the Crucifixion.
A music that despairs, weeps, and searches within itself for an empathetic development capable of bringing the listener closer to Stradella’s poignant harmony.
It is the suspension of a harmony that makes us aware of a historical distance, viewed and heard through the sensibility of today. A distorting lens that brings what we hear closer, but blurs it and pushes it further away if we look too far towards the horizon. Struggenze is one of my works in which past and present are no longer aligned diachronically, as a before and an after, but coexist in an interpenetrating verticality in which the concept of elapsed time is eluded.
